Animal Testing in France – no significant decrease of animals in 2017

In an article written by the association One Voice about scientific testing on animals in France the association concludes that even though the principal of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement (the RRR principle) has been carried out no significant  improvement has been made since 2016. The statistics of 2017 all species combined are as followed: 1,914,174 animals in 2017 compared to 1,918,481 in 2016. The French government welcomes a decrease of 0.2%, all the more significant in its view, as more research institutions responded to the survey (up 8.2%), suggesting a decrease in the average number of animal uses per facility. However it is pointed out that 40,000 animals (up to 12%) are reused several times in different experiments. And these regulated reuses are presented as a means of reducing the number of individuals engaged in experimental procedures. Does repeated abuse and longer prolonged captivity really correspond to more “refined” procedures? The prolonged and repeated torture of these reused animals, says One Voice, is quite the opposite of the objective pursued by the European directive. Yet the state  affirms that it respects the wishes of Brussels. Let’s be serious: if it’s about minimizing pain and suffering, it can’t be when the same animals are tested several times in a row.
